In an acute hospital setting, the transfusion of blood components and blood products is an integral part of everyday life. The blood safety and quality regulations 2005 became part of British law after a European directive concerning blood transfusions. It became a legal requirement that every unit of a blood product issued for transfusion has to be fully traceable from donor to receipt.
